Blue Planet Design offers a no obligation initial consultation to discuss your project from concept to completion. Our principal building designer Scott Dawson will personally meet with you on site to discuss your project in detail and how we can help you achieve a successful outcome.
Prior to meeting for the first time we will thoroughly research your property to determine what conditions or constraints may apply. This research will include council planning conditions, flood information and services locations etc.
Following the initial consultation we will promptly prepare a fee proposal for your consideration. This proposal will include a written scope of work and a design brief. Both these sections will define the extent of our services and the parameters of the project.

As a result, complying with local council requirements, organising consultants, getting the right approvals and sourcing quality builders can be a tricky business. Our service also includes managing and coordinating all the approvals that will be required for your project. These could range from council development or planning applications to siting variations and building applications.

The Building Design Process
Two stage process
Typically a project is broken down into a two stage process. Firstly a Sketch Design Phase where design ideas are explored and documented. Secondly a Working Drawing Phase where these sketch design drawings are further developed into working drawings. These working drawings are used for the purposes of obtaining building approval, builders quotes and of course the construction of your project.
STAGE ONE | Sketch Design Phase
Following the engagement of Blue Planet Design it may be necessary to sit down and discuss further the requirements of your project. Although the design brief will have already be established during the initial consultation further clarification may be needed. It is important that both client and designer are on the same page.
Contour and Detail Survey
Dependent upon the type and complexity of the project it may be necessary to engage a registered surveyor to carry out a contour and detail survey of the property. Blue Planet Design as your building designer can manage and coordinate the services of a licenced surveyor on you behalf.
Measured survey of existing buildings
For projects involving additions or alterations to existing buildings, a measured and photographic survey will need to be carried out by your building designer. A measured survey involves physically measuring the existing building to establish its over all dimensions, size of rooms, heights, locations of doors, windows and fixtures etc.
Assessment of local building regulations and codes
A full assessment of the local council building regulations and codes will need to be carried out by your building designer prior to starting the sketch design phase of the project. This is carried out to ensure your new design is compliant with councils requirements and that the approval process is smooth and seamless.
Site analysis including locations of existing services
As every building site has it own unique characteristics and complexities, a site analysis is undertaken to establish what these are enabling us to maximise the possibilities of your site. Blue Planet Design as your building designer will conduct searches as required to determine approximate locations of existing council services including sewer, storm water, water etc.
As a starting point in the design process your building designers will prepare a concept design to get the ball the rolling. This concept design is usually presented as a freehand sketch and focuses on building layout. Preparing a concept enables tangible design ideas to be communicated to the client without getting too detailed and locked in at the start of a project.
Sketch Design Drawings
Incorporating your input from the concept design sketches, the design is further developed by your building designer into more formal sketch design drawings. These drawing may include floor plans, external elevations and 3D views and will form a basis for further discussion and refinement of the design.
3D Building Model
During the Sketch Design Phase of the project the evolving design is further presented in the form of a 3D building model. This interactive 3D virtual environment enables our clients to explore and view their design in its truest form. Furthermore we provide our clients with unlimited access to these digital 3D building model files and software to allow convenient viewing in their own time.
If a development application is required your building designer will manage and coordinate the services of a town planning consultant on your behalf. We will also prepare the appropriate drawings for the council submission and liaise with the town planning consultant.
STAGE TWO | Working Drawing Phase
Working drawings will be prepared by your building designer based on the approved sketch design for the purposes of obtaining building approval, builder quotes and the construction of your project. These drawings will comply with the Building Code of Australia, local authority building codes and the relevant Australian Standards etc.
Engagement of Consultants
Blue Planet Design as your building designer will prepare and submit all the required documentation to the building certifier for the purposes of obtaining building approval. We will respond to all requests for information and liaise with the certifier, client and builder as required during this process.
Blue Planet Design can be available throughout the construction stage of the project to liaise with the builder, client, building certifier, structural engineer and other consultants. Site visits or additional documentation during the construction stage may attract additional charges.
